The Specific Uses of Minerals or Elements in the Body – Radium [Ra]

May 2009: Volume 4 Number 5

Radium has been popular in the medical field as a source of radiation in treating cancer. It has been used for the treatment of cervical cancer and malignant lesions in the oral cavity. This element is transferred to the blood stream and then deposited in bone. This activity has had disastrous consequences such as osteogenic sarcomas and anemias. Radium is an extremely hazardous material and must be handled with properly protected and adequately trained personnel. I personally think that this element should not be used for any medicinal purposes in concentrated form. The purpose for this element is not known.

We will discuss Mercury (Hg) in our next lecture as a continuation of the specific uses of trace minerals or element in our bodies.
