The Specific Uses of Minerals or Elements in the Body – Mercury [Hg]

June 2009: Volume 4 Number 6

Dentists employ mercury to mix with silver to form amalgamated silver for filling cavities in teeth. Two radioactive nuclides are used in the medical community for diagnostic purposes. Mercury metal is poisonous and even a minute amounts can be fatal. The best antidote for mercury bichlorides is sodium formaldehyde sulfoxylate, but egg albumen can be used if poisoning is discovered shortly after ingestion. The white of one egg should be administered for each 250mg of mercuric chloride ingested and emesis should be induced promptly after the egg has been administered to an injured party. The purpose for this element is not known.

We will discuss Silver (Ag) in our next lecture as a continuation of the specific uses of trace minerals or element in our bodies.
